31 Days: Day 8 Recap

All 31Days posts can be found HERE if you're interested.

October 8th - You know when you go to check out at a store, and the debit card reader asks you if you'd like to donate to a charity? Or sometimes even the cashier asks you?

First, let me back up with a story..

A couple of years ago, I was at a pet store and as I was checking out, the cashier asked if I would like to make a donation to some pet charity. I said that I wasn't interested right at that moment. Then he said to me, "Without making a donation, you could be causing a pet to become homeless."

Knife to the heart. I felt terrible, but even more so I was upset with him for using his words that way. He shouldn't make customers feel guilty for not making a donation.

Ever since then, I get kind of annoyed with those requests for donations when I'm checking out.

But on this day, I ran into the grocery store for a couple of items and as I was checking out, I was prompted on the debit card reader to make a donation to breast cancer research funding.

And in the first time in many years, I made a donation to a charity at a cash register and felt really good about doing so.

Umm that's a horrible thing for him to say to you!!! holy crap. I can only imagine if someone said that to Dylan, he would not take too kindly to it lol

I also really hate it when I'm checking out and they ask me...especially when there's other people in line. I always feel bad saying no, but for me I'd rather donate locally and know where my money is going to. But hey, donating is donating!

I donate a lot of time and money to causes near and dear to me. I don't think its fair to be made to feel guilty for not donating to a charity where you don't even know if the money is going to administration or directly to those in need.

i always feel guilty when they ask me! i usually just say something like "sure throw a dollar on there" so i'm giving a little something but not making myself broke. i try to donate to charities when i get a chance though but it's tough to donate to them all.

I cannot believe he said that to you. But glad you felt good about giving this time :)

How mean of him to say that to you! I always feel awkward when they ask because a lot of the time I don't have the extra money to give.

I always, always say yes to cashiers, restaurants, etc. that ask for donations like that. Typically they are only a dollar and I am fortunate enough that I can share some dollars every once in a while! However, I will say that the guy you mentioned definitely chose his words poorly...that is a horrible way to go about seeking donations!
