October 8th - You know when you go to check out at a store, and the debit card reader asks you if you'd like to donate to a charity? Or sometimes even the cashier asks you?
First, let me back up with a story..
A couple of years ago, I was at a pet store and as I was checking out, the cashier asked if I would like to make a donation to some pet charity. I said that I wasn't interested right at that moment. Then he said to me, "Without making a donation, you could be causing a pet to become homeless."
Knife to the heart. I felt terrible, but even more so I was upset with him for using his words that way. He shouldn't make customers feel guilty for not making a donation.
Ever since then, I get kind of annoyed with those requests for donations when I'm checking out.
But on this day, I ran into the grocery store for a couple of items and as I was checking out, I was prompted on the debit card reader to make a donation to breast cancer research funding.
And in the first time in many years, I made a donation to a charity at a cash register and felt really good about doing so.
