Book Club Friday #22

Has this not been the longest week even in all of America???

I couldn't be more happy that today I have a half day at work, and I'm off on Monday. Woo for a 3.5 day weekend! :)

Linking up with Heather and Katie to share a read with y'all, as per my usual Friday.

This week, I'm sharing Maxine by Sue Fineman.

This WAS a free kindle book when I got it, but it's now $2.99 - just so y'all know.

Book description from Good Reads:

Newlywed Cara Andrews overhears her husband talking to his girlfriend about locking Cara in an institution so he can steal her inheritance. Frightened, Cara sneaks away and rents a run-down cabin in Gig Harbor, intending to hide out until she can end her marriage.

When the cabin collapses in an earthquake, a neighbor, Nick Donatelli, risks his life to rescue her. The roads are damaged, power and phones are out. They're trapped in Nick's cabin on the shores of Puget Sound.

Nick is warm and friendly, and she enjoys his company. When he learns who she is, he's uncomfortable. Cara is one of the wealthiest women in the world, and he's a man who works with his hands. She's falling in love, but her husband is a ruthless man who'll do anything to get his hands on her estate. Cara knows she has to leave before her husband tracks her down, before he hurts Nick. Before he kills her.

My thoughts:

I didn't have super high hopes going into this book because I've found that free books aren't always amazing. The story line actually could've been very good, but the writing was just too cheesy, and the timeline goes by a little too fast in some parts. It was a quick read though.

I gave it 2 out of 5 stars.

Just a couple OOTDs

In an attempt to create more outfits out of the clothes I have in my closet, and the jewelry I have sitting on my dresser, I have decided to take some OOTD pics to share.

I am no fashionista by any means, but I do like to try and make things look cute, and feel good doing it.

I have spent tons of money on clothes, shoes and jewelry and I need to start getting better use out of it.

top: old navy | capris: target | shoes: rue 21 | earrings: barberry & lace

On my half days at work, I don't have to wear scrubs. A lot of people say they'd love to wear scrubs to work everyday, and while it IS comfortable.. I sometimes miss wearing the clothes in my closet that make me feel good about myself. Because let me tell you something.. scrubs aren't all that flattering and don't do much for your self-esteem.

top: plato's closet | capris: same as above | shoes: payless | earrings: charming charlie's | necklace: local boutique | watch: ny&co

Heading out for date night, I really wanted to wear something a bit different than I normally do. I pulled out my favorite (and oh so comfy!) wedges and went from there. I paired it with a white top because I knew it'd be fun to add colorful jewelry to.

My New Found Love/Obsession

Okay y'all. I know I'm waaay behind, but I have found my newest favorite place to shop.

Let me introduce you to New York & Company!

I had never really been in this place until a friend drug me in and then I fell in love and knew I was going to be in trouble when I literally wanted one of everything.

Let me show you a few things I've gotten on my most recent NY&Co shopping sprees.

I had been needing some new pants, and wanted some cropped styles. I got both of these pairs while they were having the BOGO sale on all pants. Pretty sure it's still going on too, if you want to go get yourself some!

I love the way maxi skirts look, and I knew I wanted a plain black one that would be easy to style and accessorize. I got this skirt for 40% off the original price.

Black maxi skirt

I had been looking for a rose gold watch, but I didn't want to spend an arm & a leg on one. So when I found the one I wanted at NY&Co for $24.95 I knew I had to have it. Well, then the sign said Buy One Piece of Jewelry and Get One Piece 75% off.

I'd been toying with the idea of one of the bubble necklaces, and found a black one there! After discounts and coupons, the bubble necklace cost less than $5. Score!

Bib necklace (except I got it in black)

Rose gold watch

This is the first thing I fell in love with there. I found it on the red line sale rack - as they're trying to get rid of summer dresses. I tried it on, and LOVED the way it fit, and thought it was very comfy. After sales and coupons, I got this dress for $12!

Striped maxi dress

All the shirts listed below were 30-40% off. I wanted to add a few different pieces in my wardrobe, but still incorporate classy and comfy pieces.

This shirt is very lightweight and comfy. It's not quite long enough for leggings, (but in all honesty I'll probably still try to pull it off) but it'd look great with skinnies. Which I don't have, soooo.....

One pocket silky blouse (except I got it in white)

I fell in love with this top immediately. I love ruffles and anything with polka dots. It will be easy to dress up with slacks, or just wear with jeans and cute shoes. Love it.

Ruffled blouse (except I got beige w/ black polka dots)

This shirt is SO comfortable, that I could literally sleep in it. I got the leopard print and it will pair adorably with a pair of black leggings.

Roll-tab blouse (except I got the one that looks like leopard print)

Overall, I think I got some great deals and have found a new place to shop! Love it!

Do you love NY&Co like I do? What is your favorite place to shop?

Weekend Update!

Happy Monday, friends!

How was everyone's weekend? Good, I hope! If you didn't do anything fun, I hope you at least got the chance to relax. :)

I'm linking up with the pretty ladies, Dana, LeeAnn and Sami to give y'all my weekend deets. You should too!

That afternoon while I was at work, my best friend texting me telling me how horrible she felt and to let me know she'd gone home from work early. Asking if I'd bring her some meds home. She'd been feeling bad, but got full-on sick Friday. On my way home, I stopped by the pharmacy and got her some nasal spray, fever reducer and gatorade and crackers to munch on.

Once I got home and made sure she was gonna live, I got ready to meet up with Nate and some friends for dinner.

I wanted to do something a little different with my hair than normal (which is taking a flat iron to it) - so after my shower I decided to try curling it with my flat iron. Well, this took a lot longer than I had expected and frustrated me, but I was overall pretty pleased with the result. Especially since it was my first time to do it by myself.

Here's the pic I took at a stop light on the way. Loving the way my hair and makeup both look!

I ended up being waaay late, which is one of Nate's pet peeves but when he saw how I'd made myself look all pretty he said the lateness could be forgiven because it was worth it. ;) God, I love that man.

So we enjoyed dinner and drinks on the patio (so nice that the weather is good enough for that now!) with 2 other couples and had a really fun time!

Nate and I woke up early, because apparently our bodies no longer let us sleep in anymore. Oh, Binky also has a lot to do with that too.

After I whined for what felt like forever, Nate and I were off to get coffee. First, I insisted on getting a family picture, obvs.

What?! You don't take horrible pics of yourself right after getting out of bed? HA! No shame here.

After coffee and a quick breakfast, we laid on the couch while Nate messed with his fantasy football teams and I finished 2 books! (you'll be getting the reviews on those later, of course!)

Jillian called me to let me know her fever was back and her throat was killing her. So since I was getting ready to head home anyway since Nate had to work, I stopped by the pharmacy and got her more drugs and some ice cream for her sore throat. I also grabbed us something to eat since I knew she wouldn't want to leave.

We lounged around watching whatever looked interesting enough on TV.

Binky likes chillin' and watching TV too. Sorry for so many awful glasses pics of myself, but I don't even bother with my contacts on the weekends unless I am doing something.

Holy laziness. Another early wakeup. We all had breakfast and watched some God awful show on Nickolodeon. It started raining really hard here, and I thought it'd be the perfect time for a nap. Liv was already down and Jill was trying to nap off her sickness. I couldn't sleep though, of course. I have the hardest time taking naps, especially on Sundays. I think because I'm worrying about sleeping that night.

So, after the others woke up, we got dressed and went to get something to eat since Jill and Liv had been stuck in the apartment all weekend.

Cheese! It's lunner (lunch/dinner) time!

After I got back home from that, my little sister called to tell me she thinks she broke her hand. What the what?! I needed more details. So, she sends me pictures and tells me how it feels. I told her she should go get an x-ray just to be safe.

So, off we went. I went to the ER with her because I knew they'd likely be giving her pain medication and I didn't want her to have to drive herself home.

Came home, showered, now typing up this blog post and mentally preparing myself for my biology lab starting tomorrow, aahhh!

I hope everyone had a great weekend, and that you have an even better week!

Book Club Friday #21

I have kinda been a reading machine lately. ;) I really love it, and it gives me something to post for y'all on Fridays! :)
Linking up with Heather and Katie!
This week, I'm sharing Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire.
SO many of my friends had read this book, and I actually bought it a while back. It was sitting in my kindle library and when I saw that the author tweeted about a movie being in the works, I knew I had to read it immediately!
Book description from GoodReads:
The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate percentage of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance between her and the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University's Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs—and wants—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.
My thoughts:
Oh my God. This book was amazing, and I flew through it in less than 72 hours. All I wanted to do was read it, and had no interest in putting it down. The story of 2 young college kids is captivating, and I found myself rooting for Travis while wondering why I didn't hate him at the same time. It was very conflicting, but I loved it all at the same time.
I gave it 5 out of 5 stars!
Have you read this book before?

Hump Day Lovin'

It has been SO long since I linked up with Jamie for WILW - I wanted to spread a little love today, so here it is! :)

I'm LOVING.. the weather Dallas has been getting lately. After suffering through 100+ temps for what felt like forever, it's finally down in the 80s and 90s. We've even been getting rain. It's the little things, people.

I'm LOVING.. best friends from high school. You know, those ones that even though you don't see them often and you don't talk everyday, you still can pick up right back where you left off. You can still talk to them about anything and everything.

Tracey, me and Steph about 3 years ago

I'm LOVING.. that my little sister and I have gotten so close over the years. The older we get, the better our friendship becomes. Talking to her in the mornings, on the phone, while we get ready for work usually makes my whole day.

I'm LOVING.. my adorable little Bink boy. Seriously y'all, I've become that "fur-mom" who's obsessed with her dog, and you know what? I kinda like it. ;)

How can you not love a face like this?!

I'm LOVING.. that I'm actually excited to start my class this coming semester. I hope it's a breeze and it doesn't stress me out too much.

What are you LOVING this week?!

Arbor Mist Frozen Wine Cocktail Review

Can we talk for just a minute about how one of my most favorite things about blogging is the perks? Because it definitely is. Seriously.

When I was contacted by the marketing coordinator from Arbor Mist to review their new line of frozen wine cocktails, I was entirely too excited. Like, it was almost embarrassing.

They sent me out a big ol' pretty package filled with yummy packages of drinks inside.

I quickly tore open the package to see what flavors they sent me. I saw 3 different pouches, along with some information pamphlets about the company and their products.

I saw that they sent me Blackberry Merlot, Strawberry White Zinfandel and White Pear Pinot Grigio.

As you can see, these are a good portion. I also noticed at first how pretty the colors are on the packaging.

The company recommends that the liquid pouches be placed in the freezer for five hours before consumption, then gently massaged before opening and squeezing to pour the beverage into a glass.

The first one I tried was the strawberry one. I put it in the freezer at Nate's one morning, and by that afternoon when I was ready to head to the pool, it was nice and frozen/slushy for me.

I poured it into a plastic cup (pool friendly!) and went on my way.

It was a bit sweeter than I had anticipated, but it was so good. I thought the icy concoction was perfect for lounging by the pool.

A few nights later my BFF and I decided to throw the other 2 (blackberry and white pear) into the freezer and have some cocktails with a movie night.

I definitely find it to be easier to pour the drink into a glass and have it that way. I imagine you could also just cut the top off of the pouch, stick a straw in it and have it that way too, if you wanted.

We each tried both of these, and agreed that the blackberry one was entirely too sweet. In my honest opinion, it tasted like pure syrup. I wasn't a fan.

The white pear one was my favorite out of all three flavors. It was very light, crisp and refreshing. The taste went perfectly with the slush.

At $1.99 retail, you really have nothing to lose when trying these. So, head out to your local grocery store and pick up a couple!

Book Club Friday #20

Good morning and happy Friday friends!
As per my usual Friday post, I've got a book review for you. If you're like me, you love this link-up because it's the perfect way to find new books to add to your ever growing to-read list..
Go ahead and link up with Heather and Katie to share your own review!
Today, I'm sharing Where We Belong by Emily Giffin.
This book was just released last month, and it's definitely worth the money of picking up a copy yourself!
Book description from GoodReads:
Marian Caldwell is a thirty-six year old television producer, living her dream in New York City. With a fulfilling career and satisfying relationship, she has convinced everyone, including herself, that her life is just as she wants it to be. But one night, Marian answers a knock on the door . . . only to find Kirby Rose, an eighteen-year-old girl with a key to a past that Marian thought she had sealed off forever. From the moment Kirby appears on her doorstep, Marian’s perfectly constructed world—and her very identity—will be shaken to its core, resurrecting ghosts and memories of a passionate young love affair that threaten everything that has come to define her.

For the precocious and determined Kirby, the encounter will spur a process of discovery that ushers her across the threshold of adulthood, forcing her to re-evaluate her family and future in a wise and bittersweet light. As the two women embark on a journey to find the one thing missing in their lives, each will come to recognize that where we belong is often where we least expect to find ourselves—a place that we may have willed ourselves to forget, but that the heart remembers forever.
My thoughts:
This book sucked me in from page one. I've always enjoyed Emily's writing, and she knows the exact way to keep her readers hooked. It's very easy to visualize the characters and pick a "favorite". You grow to love the characters. My heart ached many times while reading this book, and I found myself crying on more than one occasion. Even if you don't have a personal experience with adoption, I think this story allows each and every reader to relate in some way. Read this, you won't be sorry.
I gave it 5 out of 5 stars!
Also, I got to meet Emily and have her sign my book!
She was ridiculously sweet and hilarious. I was SO excited to meet her. I will definitely keep this book forever! :)

Super 7 Shots Photo Challenge

When I saw this blog post on Melissa's blog, I knew I just HAD to do it for myself. And, she basically tagged anyone that wanted to do it - so it was up for grabs! :)

a photo that takes my breath away
one of my best friends is a photographer. when she was trying to get her portfolio together, she asked if nate and i would pose for her "couples" shoot. it was literally like 2 months after he and i met and got together. he was such a trooper to agree to do this with me for her. most guys would've flipped. ;) i love all of the pictures she captured of us, but this one was totally non-posed and i love the sunlight peeking through. it is one of my faves, for sure.

a photo that makes me laugh or smile
this one definitely makes me laugh. me and my little sister at a friend's birthday dinner a couple of years ago. it's so typical of us. she's always making sure she has a cute smile on her face, and i will do anything to make a picture look totally silly. i know this is kinda gross, but it still makes me laugh. i was eating buffalo chicken wings, just in case you were wondering. ;)

a photo that makes me dream
the streets of italy. can i just go there, please? i'm afraid that if/when i do, i'll never  want to come back. in my mind, it's the closest one can get to heaven. i've always dreamt of traveling to italy, for as long as i can remember.

a photo that makes me think
when i look at these photos from MA graduation, i always think about what i am doing with my life/education. i think about what i want to continue doing, why i haven't done it yet, how i am going to do it and what my ultimate goal is.

a photo that makes my mouth water
oven brick style pepperoni and italian sausage pizza with pesto. drooling as i type this. i don't care if it's 8 in the morning, seeing this photo will make you want pizza. am i right or what?!

a photo that tells a story
this is one from mine and nate's 1st new year's together. i still remember that night vividly, and can tell you every detail. it was a very trying time in mine and nate's relationship. i really showed my ass that night, ha!

a photo that i'm most proud of
my dad got his one year sobriety chip this past christmas eve. i remember him coming home from his meeting and just walking in and handing the chip to me. i knew his sobriety anniversary was coming up, but i guess it didn't hit me until i saw the chip in my hand. i hadn't ever felt so proud of my dad!

if you do this post, please post your link. i'd love to read it. it's such a fun way to get to know someone by looking at pictures of their life.
